Balance Information Collection with User Experience
The Onboarding › Fields section in Cadence allows you to control what information attendees must provide when first accessing your event. Finding the right balance between collecting necessary data and creating a smooth onboarding experience is crucial for attendee satisfaction and completion rates.
When to use
When configuring a new event's onboarding process
When reviewing low onboarding completion rates
When deciding which custom fields to include in onboarding
When seeking to improve the attendee's first interaction with your event
You must have System Administrator or Event Manager permissions to modify onboarding field settings.
How to do it
Log in to your Cadence Admin account.
Navigate to your event dashboard.
Select "Onboarding" from the left sidebar menu.
Click on the "Fields" tab at the top of the page.
Check the "Enable Event-Level Custom Fields" box if you need to collect event-specific information.
You can click the "here" link to set up or edit your event-level custom fields if needed.
Choose "Selected fields" instead of "All fields" to limit the number of questions.
Limiting fields to only essential information can significantly improve completion rates.
Select only the most critical fields that provide value to both attendees and organizers.
Prioritize fields that enable personalization features like content recommendations or networking.
Consider the mobile experience when selecting fields, as many attendees will complete onboarding on mobile devices.
Complex field types like multi-select dropdowns may be difficult to complete on smaller screens.
Group related fields together to create a logical flow.
Click "Save" to apply your changes.
Test the onboarding experience yourself by resetting onboarding for a test account.
Troubleshooting
If you notice low onboarding completion rates:
Review analytics to identify which fields attendees abandon most frequently
Consider making non-essential fields optional rather than required
Ensure custom fields don't contain validation errors that prevent completion
