How to ensure accessibility when configuring Home page settings

The Home page settings in Cadence provide several options that can significantly impact accessibility for users with disabilities. By properly configuring layout, visual elements, and interactive features through the Home Menu's Settings tab, you can create an inclusive experience that works well for all attendees, including those using assistive technologies or who have visual, motor, or cognitive impairments.

When to use

  • When setting up a new event's Home page
  • When updating your event for compliance with accessibility standards
  • When accommodating attendees with diverse accessibility needs
  • When optimizing your event for assistive technologies

Before you start

You need Event Manager or Administrator permissions to modify Home page settings.

How to do it

Log in to your Cadence Admin account.
    Navigate to your event dashboard.
Click on "Home" in the left sidebar menu.
Select the "Settings" tab at the top of the page.
Choose a column layout that supports easy navigation:
  • "Single Column" is often best for screen readers and keyboard navigation
  • "Two Columns" can work well with proper heading structure
Simpler layouts generally provide better accessibility for users with cognitive impairments or those using assistive technologies.
Select "Centered" from the "Alignment (Web Only)" dropdown for consistent navigation.
Leave the Home Tile Overlay enabled to ensure text remains readable against varying background images.
Removing the tile overlay may reduce contrast and make text difficult to read for users with visual impairments.
Enable "Display Scroll bar on Home Tiles" to improve navigation for users who rely on scroll bars.
Consider disabling the countdown timer if it creates unnecessary motion that could distract users with cognitive disabilities.
Keep event name and location visible by leaving "Hide event name, date & location display" unchecked.
Clear labeling of event details helps users with cognitive disabilities maintain context.
Adjust background opacity to improve contrast:
  • Check "Gradient Slider Adjust Home Screen Opacity"
  • Set opacity to at least 30% for better text contrast
Preview your Home page using the "Preview" button in the upper right corner.
Test keyboard navigation by using Tab, Enter, and arrow keys to move through content.
Click "Save" to apply your accessibility-focused settings.

Troubleshooting

If users report difficulty reading text on Home tiles, increase the opacity percentage to improve contrast between text and background images.
