How to address readability issues when removing tile overlays

The Home page in Cadence features tiles with a default gray overlay that helps ensure text remains readable against various background images. When you remove this overlay through the Home Menu's Settings tab, text legibility may suffer, especially with busy or low-contrast background images. This guide will help you maintain readability while still showcasing your vibrant tile images.

When to use

  • When text on tiles becomes difficult to read after removing the overlay
  • When you want to display tile images without the gray tint but maintain text legibility
  • When working with varied background images that affect text visibility
  • When balancing brand aesthetics with functional readability

Before you start

You need Event Manager or Administrator permissions to modify Home page settings.

How to do it

Log in to your Cadence Admin account.
    Navigate to your event dashboard.
Click on "Home" in the left sidebar menu.
Select the "Settings" tab at the top of the page.
Adjust the opacity instead of completely removing the overlay:
  • Keep "Remove Home Tile Overlay" unchecked
  • Check "Gradient Slider Adjust Home Screen Opacity"
  • Use the slider to set opacity between 20-30%
A slight opacity of 20-30% often provides the best balance between showcasing images and maintaining text readability.
Preview your changes by clicking the "Preview" button in the upper right corner.
Test readability by checking if text on all tiles remains clearly visible.
If you must remove the overlay completely, modify your tile images:
  • Use images with solid or less busy areas where text appears
  • Choose images with natural contrast that supports text visibility
  • Consider darker images for better text contrast with light text
Completely removing the overlay by checking "Remove Home Tile Overlay" may make text unreadable on some background images.
Consider enabling centered alignment for more consistent text positioning:
  • Select "Centered" from the "Alignment (Web Only)" dropdown
Click "Save" at the bottom of the page to apply your changes.

Troubleshooting

If text remains difficult to read after adjusting settings, try using the "Two Columns" layout which typically provides more space for text and can improve readability compared to other layouts.
